Lines Reticular versus Lines Curved

Condition 1

Condition 2

Description

Lines take precedence over other structures and lines reticular is a common structure because we look at a lot of nevi. Remember it is made up of the arrangement of pigmented cells over the dermal papillae (clear holes) and along the sides of the rete ridges (pigmented network). A pseudo network can be seen on the face where the rete ridges are flattened. What you see are the openings of the hair follicles.

Reticular pattern (pigment network with relatively regular, net-like lines)

  • Usually seen in benign melanocytic nevi, especially in areas with light-to-medium pigmentation.
  • Lines tend to be uniform in thickness and evenly distributed, forming a regular network.
  • Light areas (between lines) are fairly uniform; the network is often complete and symmetric.
  • Other benign features may accompany it (uniform color, small dot glands, no regression structures).
